SUFFOLK, Va. — Mr. S.T. Venois Williams Sr., 88, of 225 North Lloyd St., Suffolk, died July 29, 2009 in the home of his son and daughter-in-law. He was a native of Gasburg, Va., and the son of the late Providence Williams and Roena Thrower.
He retired from St. Julian Creek Ammunition Depot in Portsmouth, Va. in 1971. He served our country during World War II as part of the Red Ball Express. He was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ where he served as treasurer of the Male Usher Board, member of the Male Chorus and Combined Choir, a member of the Laymen Fellowship, Superintendent of the Sunday School and Usher Board. His dedication earned him the Golden Years Award and the Meritorious Service Award. He was a member of the Middle District Church School Union and the Whaleyville Deer Club.
He leaves to cherish his memories three daughters, Patricia A. Holland, of Killeen, Texas, Carolyn F. Dillard and Deborah L. Parker, of Suffolk, Va.; one son, S.T. Venois Williams Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; special daughter-in-law and caregiver, Azalea E. Williams, of Suffolk, Va.; one sister, Earlene Williams Peebles, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special friend, Ms. Ophelia James; a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Ben Fitzgerald. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. The family will have a memorial service on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors and friends at 2048 Brians Lane, Suffolk, VA 23434.
