There were no injuries reported in an accident on Godwin Boulevard Monday morning that involved a school bus. No students were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
The bus had finished dropping students off at the summer school program at King’s Fork Middle School, and was stopped at the intersection of Godwin and Centerbrooke Lane when it was rear-ended by a Ford station wagon.
According to police reports, the driver of the vehicle said she tried to apply her brakes, but that she was also “focused on the car radio.”
The driver of the station wagon, Traci Lynne Owens, 18, of Chesapeake was charged with reckless driving.
The damage to the school bus was minimal, with only paint scratches listed as damages on the police report.
The station wagon, however, was totaled.
Suffolk Public Schools Public Information Officer Bethanne Bradshaw said Monday’s accident will not affect transportation needs for summer school students.
“Bus services will continue as planned,” Bradshaw said. “Since not all 14,000 students are in summer school, we have several buses not in regular summer service that can be substituted if needed.”
