Council has Obici House on plate

The City Council will discuss the fate of Obici House, the possible sale of city property on Commerce Street and the relocation of the Voter Registrar’s office at its meeting on Wednesday.
The evening begins with a work session on the post-employment benefits trust at 4 p.m. in City Council chambers, 441 Market St. The regular session begins at 7 p.m.
Council will consider a draft request for proposals for the use of Obici House, located on the Sleepy Hole Golf Course. The idea of the request for proposals was devised by council at its June 3 meeting, following the award to planning commissioner and contractor Ronnie Rountree of a 20-year lease for operation of the golf course. The Obici House and Carriage House, however, were not part of the lease.
About 50 people showed up to support the Obici House during that meeting, including Jolyne Dalzell, the great-niece of Amedeo Obici.
Also during Wednesday’s meeting, council will hear the public on six matters regarding zoning, ordinance amendments and more. One ordinance would, if approved, authorize the sale of a parking lot located at 85 Commerce St. to Peter Decker Jr., of Warehouse Properties. Decker requested to purchase 12 parking spaces and the adjacent dumpster pad for $55,200. The parking lot abuts property already owned by Warehouse Properties at 75 Commerce St.
Another public hearing during the meeting will focus on the relocation of the Voter Registrar’s Office, currently at 425 W. Washington St., Suite 4, to the municipal building. The proposed move is part of an on-going plan to relocate city departments from leased office space into city-owned space.
The registrar would be moving into space being vacated by the police department, which is moving into its new building across the street in August. In order for the registrar move to take place, the Department of Justice also must approve the move.
