Are you between the ages of 13-15 years old?
Do you have good grades?
Would you like to play basketball for your own community?
Boogie’s Neighborhood Youth Basketball League is forming and is looking for players in the communities of Hoffler, Cypress Manor, Parker Riddick, Colander Bishop, Lake Kennedy and Hollywood to start a citywide boys basketball league.
Beyond hoops, the purpose of the league will be to mentor young boys by encouraging competitive and motivational skills, developing good sportsmanship, promoting physical fitness and promoting good character for future leadership in the community. Each player must maintain academic standards by sustaining a “C” grade average.
Practices will be held in each community. Games are scheduled to be held on Thursday nights at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Transportation, supplies and uniforms will be provided.
The City of Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with the league to provide equipment and the use of Booker T. Washington’s gym.
Area businesses are sponsoring the league, along with Boogie’s Auto Repair and the Suffolk Police Department. The sponsors are providing coaches and referees. Having police officers at practices and games in an unofficial manner is meant to promote trust within the communities between youth and the officers. It will also deter delinquency and other unwanted activities.
It is the hope of Boogie’s Auto Repair to have the league grow all over Suffolk in the future and possibly start girls cheerleading teams as well.
Other sponsors of the league are: LW’s Lawn Service, R&M Car Care, C.C. Construction and Repair, We Move By Faith and Bruce J’s Masonry.
