On campus: Former Cav with NCAA track result

Hampton sophomore Predist Walker (Lakeland) won an individual title and was part of a Pirate relay title as the Pirates’ men’s track team won the team championship at the Hampton Relays on Saturday.
Walker won the long jump (7.37 meters) and clinched an NCAA regional qualifying spot with his result. Walker was on Hampton’s winning 4×100-meter relay team which set a mark of 40.78 seconds.
Hampton University’s softball team swept three straight games against visiting Howard this weekend. In Sunday’s game, the finale of the series, Hampton won 6-5. Kelsei Saunders (Nansemond River) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to bring HU within 5-4 of the Bison.
Saunders, a freshman third baseman, has hit nine of Hampton’s 19 home runs this season. Saunders also leads HU in batting average (.394), slugging percentage (.766) and RBI (26). Hampton is 17-16 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Freshman LaTonia Gatling (King’s Fork) drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly as Fayetteville State defeated conference foe Virginia State 3-2 in eight innings as part of a doubleheader sweep on Friday. FSU won the opening game 1-0.
Gatling’s RBI came in “walk-off” form in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gatling, an outfielder for FSU, is hitting .276 with 26 runs and 10 stolen bases.
Fayetteville St. (21-23, 15-1 CIAA) has won the Eastern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Bowie St. (17-1 CIAA) is the Western Division winner. The two schools split a doubleheader earlier this season. The CIAA Tournament starts Thursday in Petersburg.
Chowan’s softball team earned the number one seed for the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) South Regional Tournament which starts Saturday in Franklin Springs, Ga.
Outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) has played in all 44 games for Chowan (25-19). Byrd’s hitting .214 with 23 runs, six doubles and two triples.
Hampden-Sydney junior Kyle Jett (Nansemond-Suffolk) scored a hat trick in HSC’s 15-7 lacrosse win at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Jett is second on the Hampden-Sydney team with 25 goals and first for the Tigers with 15 assists. HSC is 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
