Hundreds audition for Franco film

Bayard Mason did not even have time to make copies of the sign up sheets.

He had to recruit reinforcements to run to the copier.

Mason was running the registration table for the open casting call held in Suffolk on Monday afternoon for a new short film, “Herbert White.”

Much to the surprise of organizers, hundreds of people flocked to the Hilton Garden Inn, chasing after their fifteen minutes of fame.

“It has been insane,” said Amelia Host, an organizer of the casting call.

Orginially, the auditions were to have been held at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, but at the last minute organizers swapped it for the Hilton in case a big crowd did come.

“We got worried about fitting all the people,” Host said. “That’s when we moved it here, and it has been like this since the doors opened.”

Mothers were waiting with their babies in strollers.

Groups of actors were clutching their headshots in one hand and their sign up sheets in the other.

Teenagers, including Windsor High School students Jessica Lonsdale and Alaina Rinehart, sat together killing time before their big tryout.

Lonsdale said the two had been anxious all day since hearing about the audition on the news that morning.

“Oceanography was like three hours long,” she said. “We were talking about how bad we wanted to get down here all day.”

Very few details have been released about the script, only that the plot is a “backwoods, barefoot thriller,” according to Host. Accordingly, casting agents were looking for people to play redneck drunks and barefoot, farm kids.

It’s a role, Rinehart said, that is perfect for anyone in the area.

“We have all this stuff,” she said, in reference to her plaid shirt and jeans. “This is sort of our life. It’s kind of like we the fit the part already.”

While the girls thought they fit the part perfectly, others came around for another reason: The short film was written and will be directed by Hollywood A-lister James Franco.

Last year alone, Franco starred in the summer hit “Pineapple Express,” as well as the Academy Award-winning drama “Milk.” He has also starred in the three “Spiderman” movies, as well as the cult favorite television series, “Freaks and Geeks.”

Even though Franco was not at the casting call, his celebrity status still brought in some fans.

“I mean, definitely, Franco,” said Megan Woods, when asked what brought her out to the audition. “He’s hot, so why not? And to have something this big out here to be a part of is great.”

For some, just the chance to get to act was a big enough draw.

“I’m just an actress, and I’ve been acting since I was 3,” said a now 9-year-old Emily Levy. “When I saw this in the newspaper, I was, absolutely, ‘Yay!’ I had to come out. I absolutely have to.”

Callbacks from the audition will last throughout the end of the week, Host said. Shooting will take place April 9-12 in Suffolk and the surrounding areas.
