Washington Redskins Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, the owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, will appear at Friday’s Arena Racing USA event at the Hampton Coliseum.
During this special appearance, Gibbs will race Interstate Batteries Chairman, Norm Miller, a long-time sponsor of the Joe Gibbs Racing’s #18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Car.
They will compete for bragging rights in two identical ArenaCars, taking part in what could be the first race of its kind — pitting a top NASCAR Sprint Cup owner against his sponsor.
“These guys are true racers at heart,” Arena Racing USA founder Ricky Dennis said. “I would not be surprised to see some fierce competition between them. The winner will be bragging for a while after this event!”
“This is an exciting opportunity for fans and sponsors, alike, to help us celebrate the 100th race event in Hampton, Va. with Joe and Norm,” said Bob Keane, president and CEO of the organization.
Arena Racing USA will also salute the military on Friday by offering half-price tickets at the box office to all military personnel with an ID. The evening’s opening ceremonies will consist of an enlistment of new recruits into the Army.
“I am excited to be a part of the 100th race event in Hampton,” Gibbs said. “It marks a significant milestone for Arena Racing USA. It shows the unlimited potential of this new and exciting sports entertainment product.”
“Interstate Batteries and I personally have seen the growth in sponsorship in auto racing over the past 25 years, we are committed to Arena Racing USA and believe it will see the same explosive growth,” stated Norm Miller, chairman of Interstate Batteries.
“The enlistment is a special part of our Military Appreciation Night,” said Blake Murphy, CEO of the Hampton Roads License of Arena Racing USA. “This will be the third one we have done, and to have Joe Gibbs and Norm Miller here will make it all the more special. This will be the 100th regular season race held in Hampton Roads and I cannot think of a more special way to mark that achievement than to honor the military. Plus the fans will be in for a special treat when Gibbs takes on Miller for the shootout,” concluded Murphy.
