NR alums leading Builder basketball

Apprentice School junior Eric Joe (Nansemond River) was named Player of the Week in U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Division I for the week ending Dec. 20.
Joe scored 23.5 points per game, including a career-high game of 30 points against Bluefield, and had 7.5 rebounds per game in two games that week.
Through Dec. 30 and a 79-72 loss at Concordia (Cal.), the Builders are 6-7 overall and 3-0 in conference. Joe, a 6-foot-1 guard, is averaging 19.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.
Apprentice’s women’s basketball team defeated Washington and Lee 74-59 on Tuesday in Lexington. Junior center Shameka Warren (Nansemond River) had 12 points (6-of-12 field goals) and 11 rebounds for the Lady Builders (4-8). The game was tied, 33-33, at halftime.
Freshmen Natarsha Whitworth (Lakeland) and Le’Cetra Arrington (Nansemond River) are also on the Lady Builder squad.
Old Dominion’s men’s swimming team improved to a 5-0 record with a win against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Dec. 20.
Freshman Phillip Brooks (Nansemond-Suffolk) competes in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breaststroke for the Monarchs.
Christopher Newport’s men’s basketball team went 1-2 at the Cactus Jam Tournament in Phoenix, Az. Dec. 27-30, losing its first two games before defeating SUNY-Old Westbury 96-86 on Dec. 30.
For the season, junior Josh Russell (Lakeland) is averaging 8.0 points per game and 40.5 percent three-point shooting and freshman Loren Farris (King’s Fork) is averaging 5.1 minutes and 1.4 points per game.
CNU (5-5) hosts the Captains Shootout on Saturday and Sunday. CNU’s first round game is against Maryland Bible on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
