WVEC to pull out from Charter

Officials with WVEC-TV said Monday that, effective Dec. 31, the Norfolk-based ABC television affiliate will no longer be available as part of the package that Charter Cable offers its subscribers.
Charter and WVEC have been unable to reach an agreement on terms for the carriage of WVEC’s signal, officials said in a press release on Monday. This action follows years of carriage negotiations between WVEC-TV13 and Charter, the release stated.
Charter officials did not return calls for comment Monday afternoon.
“We are disappointed that WVEC-TV13’s award-winning news, and local and network programming will be removed from Charter’s channel lineup,” WVEC President and General Manager Jim Berman stated in the release. “It is unfortunate that Charter does not see the value in offering WVEC-TV13’s signal to its subscribers. We remain hopeful that we can quickly resolve this issue with minimal disruption to our viewers.”
The television station’s signal will continue to be available over-the-air to viewers with a digital television purchased after May 2007. Anyone with an older television or a television without a built-in digital tuner will need to obtain a converter box by Feb. 17 in order to receive the over-the-air broadcasts after that date.
