Doughtie wins title at collegiate event

North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie (Nansemond-Suffolk) won the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship Friday through Sunday in Knoxville, Tenn. at Fox Den Country Club (par 72, 6,058 yards).

Doughtie, a senior with the Wolfpack golf team, was fourth entering the last round of play on Sunday before shooting 4-under par 68 to win by two shots. Doughtie eagled the par-five 10th hole and went on to card three more birdies versus one bogey while shooting 32 on the back nine of her final round. Doughtie finished with rounds of 68-73-68 (-7).

North Carolina St. finished tied for second out of 18 schools. NCSU tied with North Carolina nine shots behind Louisiana St. There were 96 individual golfers in the tournament. Dori Carter of Mississippi and Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville each finished 5-under in a tie for second individually.

Field hockey notes

James Madison junior Kelsey Cutchins (Lakeland) had back-to-back shutouts in goal for JMU’s field hockey squad over the weekend in a two-match trip to Louisville.

On Saturday, No. 7 JMU defeated Villanova 1-0. On Sunday, the Dukes beat No. 11 Louisville 1-0. Cutchins now has six shutouts on the season. JMU has tied a program record with 10 straight wins and its overall record stands at 12-1.

In the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll released on Tuesday, JMU moved up to No. 6. The ranking is the best for JMU since a No. 4 ranking in September 2002.

Christopher Newport sophomore Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal for the Captains in a 2-0 victory over Kenyon on Saturday in a match played at Washington and Lee.

Through a match on Monday, a 4-3 double-overtime loss to No. 5 (NCAA Div. III) Ursinus, Yandle is tied for the team-high with six goals. Two of Yandle’s six goals have been game-winning goals.

CNU is 10-4 overall and ranked No. 20 in the nation.

Randolph-Macon’s field hockey team is atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record after a 3-0 win on Wednesday in Ashland against Virginia Wesleyan.

Nicole Klee (Lakeland), a junior midfielder, has started 12 of RMC’s 13 matches. Klee has one goal and one assist on the season. RMC is 6-7 overall.

Radford has won three straight matches with a 5-0 score vs. Davidson, a 2-1 shootout win vs. Longwood and a 2-1 win on Saturday against Appalachian St. The streak improves Radford’s record to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the NorPac Conference.

Freshman back Lynsey Daughtrey (Lakeland) has started all 13 matches for Radford. Daughtrey has three assists for the Highlanders.

Randolph-Macon’s volleyball team has won 14 of its last 15 matches to build a 16-5 overall record and a 6-0 record in the ODAC. Junior April Hines (Nansemond River) leads the Yellow Jackets with 7.5 kills per match. Hines is also averaging 2.4 blocks per match.

Averett senior Chris Ashcraft (Lakeland) booted a 33-yard field goal and was 4-for-4 kicking extra points on Saturday in Averett’s 31-17 victory at Methodist in Fayetteville, N.C. Averett is 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the USA South Conference.
