Mattie Womble

Mattie May Hobbs Womble, 93, former chief deputy treasurer for the city of Suffolk, died Sept. 17, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital.
Born in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Ephraim Jackson and Sallie B. Hobbs and widow of Benjamin Elbert Womble Sr. She was also preceded in death by her grandson R. Seton Williams. Mrs. Womble was a member of First Baptist Church and for many years worked in the city treasurer’s office.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Treva Womble and Robert Williams, of Northville, Mich., Ben E. and Gail Womble Jr., of Williamsburg, Va.; sister, Maryvonne Brinkley, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Trevor Williams, of Boston, Mass., Kelly Winn, of Chesterfield, Va., Mark Womble, of Arlington, Va., Tim Womble, of Williamsburg; great-grandchildren, Piper Winn and Teagan Winn.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Mary Henderson with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
