The tragic accident in Southampton County yesterday should serve as a reminder to all of us to be more careful on the roads.

Yesterday afternoon, Senior Trooper Robert A. Hill, of the Virginia State Police, was

struck and killed by a 1995 Cadillac as he was in the process of issuing a traffic summons on the side of Route 58 in Southampton County. Two other drivers also suffered injuries (see the story, this page).

Trooper Hill was 42 years old. He is survived by his wife and two children.

This sad incident, right at the beginning of the holiday season, is a chilling example of what can happen when drivers are not careful with their actions. Regardless of the details of why this accident happened, a wife has lost her husband, and two children have lost their father. The Virginia State Police has lost

a 19-year veteran, and the community has lost an active volunteer.

This holiday season, and all year ‘round, be safe on the roads. Pay attention to traffic hazards. Don’t let yourself be distracted by such things as cell phones, radios and food. Check your car’s blind spot before changing lanes. Be alert to icy or wet conditions, and maintain a reasonable speed under any conditions.

Innocent

lives depends on your safe driving. Please be safe behind the wheel.
