CURRITUCK – Bertie High School will have three students-athletes in the regionals.
The Lady Falcon tennis team placed singles competitor Brittany Hoggard and doubles team Holly Cowand and Megan Cowan in the regionals with wins in the qualifying event here Tuesday afternoon.
“I felt confident that all of our girls could win,” sixth-year coach Jackie Copeland said. “I am really happy for Megan, Holly and Brittany and I am proud of all of them.”
Hoggard took a first-round win over Christina Norton of Currituck in what was labeled an upset win. Hoggard won the match by identical counts of 6-0.
After that win, she defeated Cecilia Jones by a 6-4, 6-2 count to advance to the regionals.
In doubles’ action, Cowan and Cowand received a first-round bye before advancing to meet Currituck’s team of Cameron Spencer and Kelly Hudak.
Cowan and Cowand took that match 6-1 and 6-2 to earn their way into the regionals, which are slated for Barton College on October 20.
Bertie’s other doubles’ team advanced to the qualifier finals. Carla Cooper and Caroline Hoggard defeated a Hertford County team 6-1 and 6-1 to advance to meet the Knights’ team of Holly Harris and Jessica Medinger.
Currituck’s team won that match 6-1 and 6-0.
In singles’ action, senior Jessica Jones of Bertie won her first round match by defeating Katrina Oakley 6-0 and 6-1. Jones was then defeated by Hertford County’s Sarah Brown 1-6 and 6-7 with the tiebreaker going to Brown, 12-10.
“When we have so many girls who never played until they started here, it’s obvious they have worked hard to get where they have,” Copeland said. “Even though the others didn’t make it to regionals, they played hard and represented Bertie High School well.”
