WINDSOR – While turnout was generally low for Tuesday’s municipal elections in Bertie County, that failed to prevent a tight race in at least one town.
In Aulander, unofficial totals show the race as razor close for the fifth and final seat on the town’s Board of Commissioners.
For now, that seat belongs to incumbent Commissioner Jeanette Tinkham who collected 52 of the 104 votes cast. She edged out political newcomers Tony Todd (50 votes) and Robin Bland (49).
By noon yesterday (Wednesday) neither Todd nor Bland had asked for a recount of the ballots. They have until 5 p.m. on Nov. 16 to make that request.
Aulander’s remaining four incumbent Commissioners were also reelected. That effort was led by Henry Spruill who collected 77 votes. Also earning another term in office were Dennis Wilder Sr. (74 votes), Mary Jane Taylor (65) and Bobbie Parker (57).
Joe R. Jernigan Sr., Aulander’s incumbent Mayor who was running unopposed, will also return for another term as he garnered 76 votes.
Other municipal election results in Bertie County are as follows:
Colerain n None of the incumbents were challenged as Mayor Burney Baker (30 votes) and Town Commissioners Bill Harrell (24), Duncan Hughes (22), Carroll Northcott (21), Robert Fringer (18) and Leroy Farless (17) will return to office.

Lewiston-Woodville n Following the lead of most Bertie municipalities, this town also witnessed incumbents ruling the roost as five veterans returned to office.
Mayor Carl Lee Sr. led all vote-getters as his name was listed on 50 ballots.
In the Lewiston District, unchallenged incumbents Dayle Vaughan (38 votes) and Chris Cordon (32) were reelected to the Town Council. Likewise for Woodville District incumbents Martha Thompson (35) and Eddie Graham Jr. (25) who will return for another term in office.

Also, incumbent Town Commissioners Carroll Minton (34 votes) and H.C. Boschen (32) earned another term on the Roxobel board. There, they will be joined by newcomers David Bracy, who earned 33 votes, and Sammy Ray Pruden (32).
Powellsville n No one challenged the incumbents in this town as Mayor Thomas Asbell (36 votes) along with veteran Commissioners Ernie Carter (33), C.D. Hoggard (32) and J.T. Watford (32) will return to office.
