Staff report
The school bus driver involved in a fatal accident Friday morning in Driver has been charged with failure to stop at a red light, according to a Suffolk Police Department spokesman.
Evelyn Cartwright, 62, of Suffolk, is alleged to have run the light at the intersection of Bennetts Pasture Road and Kings Highway. Her bus struck a Honda driven by Verna M. Vance of Chesapeake. Vance died at the scene. Cartwright, as well as a student who was a passenger on the bus, were uninjured.
Police said the impact of the 26,000-pound bus forced the some 3,000-pound Honda almost 135 feet across the road onto the soft embankment off Bennetts Pasture.
