John William Bill Harville

Courtland – John William &uot;Bill&uot; Harville, 78, retired Superintendent of Southampton County Public Schools, died Thursday, September 2,2004 at Courtland Healthcare Center. Born in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Carl L. and Lois Rogers Harville.
An Air Force veteran of VWVII and a 1951 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. Bill received his Masters degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the Southampton County School System, he was Superintendent for the Nelson County Public Schools; a former Principal for Drewryville, Nelson County and Luray and a former employee of the Virginia State Department of Education. He was a former Ruritan and Mason and a member of the Southampton County/Franklin Retired Teachers Association and Courtland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Katharine Manry Harville, two daughters, Martha M. Harville of Germany and Nancy Gomez and husband, Rayman, of Carthage. NC; two sons, John William Harville, Jr. and wife, Sherrie, of Rincon, GA and Edward H. Harville and wife, Betty Jo, of Suffolk; three sisters, Cecile H. Winston and Martha H. Johnson, both of Petersburg and Carlton H. Whelan of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Kyle and Allison Harville of Rinco_ GA. Matthew Brown, Isaac Fox and Stephen and Daniel Gomez of Carthage, NC, Michael and Katharine Harville of Suffolk. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Betty H. Francioni.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Manry Family Cemetery on linden Street with Rev. David G. Henson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggests that memorials be made to the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 439 or Courtland Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 449, Courtland, Va. 23837.
