Herbert W. Mansfield

Herbert Winslow Mansfield, 87, of Suffolk, died Sunday, April 18, 2004.
A native of Edenton, he was a son of the late Annie Francis and Willie Amariah Mansfield. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Louise Britt Mansfield; his sister, Sarah M. Jones; and brothers William, Joe, Lofton, Percy, and Robert Mansfield.
He worked for many years at Benthall’s Manufacturing until its closing. He then went on to retire from Hobbs-Adams Engineering, working as a machinist.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in which he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Thurman Hayes Sunday School class.
He was an avid gardener and always kept an immaculate lawn.
He was a U.S. Army veteran after serving in WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Worrell Barnhill Mansfield of Suffolk; a brother, Lester K. Mansfield of Suffolk; a stepson and daughter-in-law, William C. Barnhill Jr. and Lovie of Sunbury, N.C.; step- grandchildren, W. Braxton Barnhill and Meredith L. Barnhill of Sunbury, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church with Dr. David H. Chauncey and the Rev. Charles W. Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Parr Funeral Home.
