Sophia G. Holland

Sophia Groski Holland, 80, of Suffolk, died Monday, May 5, 2003, in Obici Hospital. Born in McDowell County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Nicola Brosky Groski, and the widow of James Emerson Holland. She was predeceased by three sisters, Stella Kowalski, Annie Piersa and Wanda Wirgeau; and a brother, Alex Groski.
Mrs. Holland had retired as a teacher’s aide with the Suffolk Public School System, and was a member of South Quay Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky Holland Duckwitz, and her husband, Rick of Virginia Beach; three sons, James E. Holland Jr., and his wife, Dawn of Franklin; Robert E. Holland of Kennewick, Wash.; and Terry L. Holland of Suffolk; two sisters, Pat Groski and Helen Phillips, both of Chesapeake;
nine grandchildren, Jason and Megan Duckwitz; Nikki and Kaitlynn Holland; Scott, Allison, and Caitlin Carter; Michelle H. Tomlin, and Kim H. Soniak.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. William Hawkins and the Rev. Sharon James officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 8901 South Quay Rd.
