Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kemple Sutphin of Raleigh, N.C. announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Kemple Sutphin, to Joshua Pretlow Henderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Burr Henderson III of Suffolk.

Miss Sutphin is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Edward Sutphin, and Governor and Mrs. Hulett Carlson Smith, all of Beckley, W.Va..

She is also the granddaughter of the late Charles Scott Lewis Jr., who also lived in Beckley.

Mr. Henderson is the grandson of Mrs. Joshua Pretlow and Mrs. Bert Burr Henderson Jr., both of Suffolk.

He is also the grandson of the late Joshua Pretlow and the late Bert Burr Henderson Jr., who also lived in Suffolk.

Miss Sutphin is a graduate of Meredith College, and is employed by The Independent Weekly Newspaper in Raleigh.

Mr. Henderson is a graduate of Virginia Tech, and is employed by Clarkson Consulting Firm.

The wedding is planned for Saturday, Oct. 4, in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Chuckatuck.
