Today, Pennie Spruiell has lived to see 105 Christmas Eves.
Last Thursday she was treated to a special birthday party in the dining room of Autumn Care Nursing and Rehab Center by the activities department.
About 65 residents, staff members, and Spruiell’s niece, Delsie Privott, took part in a deli, enjoyed lunch and a musical performance by two staff members dedicated to Spruiel. Residents sang happy birthday and Santa paid a special visit, passing out Christmas gifts to those attending.
Spruiell was born in Edenton, N.C. on Dec. 24, 1897, to the late Joe and Arnette Bonner. She was married to the late Sinclair Spruiell and has one adopted daughter, Shelia Spruiell.
Even though she never had any children of her own, she has reared many because of her career as a mid-wife.
She arrived at the nursing care facility 10 years ago. Celeste Alston, a 23-year employee and an assistant activities director at the facility, said that Spruiell is a gentle person and has an outgoing personality.
&uot; She loves attending religious activities and sings and prays all of the time. Her favorite snacks are Little Debbie cakes and lollipops,&uot; said Alston.
