A Windsor student received a $500 scholarship from the Suffolk-Nansemond Izaak Walton League of America at the organization’s September meeting at King’s Fork Community House.
James Pritchard, league president, and Darren Stauffer, chairman of the Scholarship Committee, presented the check to Brittany Lee Bishop to help with college expenses.
Bishop graduated from Windsor High School and is attending Christopher Newport University. She is majoring in marine biology.
Bishop and her parents, Jim and Lee Bishop, reside in Zuni.
Money for the scholarship came from a portion of a raffle for a quilt donated by Cornelius Spivey as a memorial to her deceased husband, J. Vernon Spivey.
Chances were sold at the National Izaak Walton National convention. Additional funds were supplied by the local chapter and a trust was set up to receive other donations. This is the second year that a scholarship has been presented.
The scholarship is opened to any student graduating from high school in the area of the local chapter.
The organization requires that a student must attend college with conservation of our natural resources as their goal.
