On campus: Rodgers is Big East Rookie of Week

Georgetown freshman TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) was named Big East Rookie of the Week on Monday after leading the Lady Hoyas (5-2) to a 2-0 record last week.

Rodgers scored 29 points at Georgetown’s win at Central Michigan on Tuesday and scored 25 points on Saturday in Georgetown’s 90-57 win over Wofford in Washington, D.C. Saturday’s rout was Georgetown’s first home game of the season.

For the season, Rodgers, a 5-foot-11 guard, is averaging 20.6 points per game and leading the Big East with 3.4 three-pointers made per game. Rodgers was 6-for-8 from three-point range in Saturday’s game and she added five assists and three steals.

Georgetown played at LaSalle on Tuesday night and will host Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon.

East Carolina’s football team won its regular season finale on Saturday in Greenville, N.C., beating Southern Mississippi 25-20.

Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) had another big day for the Pirate offense with eight receptions for 83 yards. Freeney is second on the team in receptions (38), receiving yards (575) and receiving touchdowns (3).

ECU (8-4, 7-1) won the East Division of Conference USA and will try to defend its conference championship on Saturday in the Conference USA Championship Game. ECU hosts West Division winner Houston (10-2, 6-2, No. 25-ranked) at 12 p.m. The Pirates and Cougars didn’t meet in the regular season.

Christopher Newport’s men’s basketball team rebounded from an 0-2 start to the season to win the CNU Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Newport News. The Captains beat Maine-Presque Isle 91-69 on Friday and beat Southern Virginia 93-82, in overtime, in the final on Saturday.

Senior guard Josh Russell (Lakeland) had nine points and two assists against Maine-Presque Isle, then poured in 23 points, including four three-pointers, five assists and three rebounds, against Southern Virginia. The 23 points is Russell’s collegiate career high.

CNU (2-2) hosts Maryland Bible on Thursday evening.

And by the way for those of you looking to support her. She has a game on Dec. 12 at the University of Richmond at 12. It's as close as she gets to Suffolk.
