11 displaced in fire

Eleven people were displaced in a fire that damaged four apartments at the Nansemond Square Apartments in the 100 block of Nancy Drive Thursday.
The fire was reported at 4:39 p.m., and the first units arrived at 4:45 p.m. Firefighters found flames and smoke showing from the second story of the apartment building.
The fire originated in an upstairs apartment and extended into a neighboring apartment, according to the press release. Two downstairs apartments sustained water damage.
Being assisted by the American Red Cross are one adult and two children who were displaced from the apartment where the fire originated, as well as one adult and three children who were displaced from another apartment.
Two adults and two children were displaced from the third apartment and are being assisted by family members. The fourth apartment was vacant.
None of the occupants of the affected apartments was home at the time of the blaze. No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
