A Smithfield man has died of his injuries from a vehicle fire on Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at 5:23 a.m. The vehicle, described in a city press release as an older four-door Buick, was parked about 15 yards from the Crittenden Sunoco in the 1600 block of Bridge Road.

Firefighters found the vehicle partially engulfed in flames and rescued the driver by breaking the glass and removing him from the vehicle, according to the press release.

The victim has been identified as Alvin Bernard Greene, 64. He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by ground ambulance but died at the hospital.

The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department responded along with several units from Suffolk Fire and Rescue. The fire marshal is investigating.
