General Dynamics warns of layoffs

General Dynamics in North Suffolk could lay off as many as 88 employees by the end of April, the company warned this week.
The company, which is located on Lake View Parkway in the Joint Staff complex, filed a state-required notice that the layoffs could happen.
“In the government contract world these days, it’s kind of normal business,” said Mark Meudt, a General Dynamics spokesman.
The military is taking bids to renew four contracts the company currently holds, Meudt said.
“It just so happens four of these task orders are coming up for re-compete about the same time,” he said. “When you have the potential to not re-win the business, you have to put out these WARN notices as required by law. We certainly hope to be able to win them, but if we don’t win them the impacted employees have opportunities to follow on with the contractor that does.”
The facility employs about 200 people and does a variety of tasks in support of Joint Staff J7, as well as information technology support.
“It’s just normal business,” Meudt said. “We certainly hope we’ve done a job that will allow us to re-win the business.”
