The deaths of a married couple in a North Suffolk residence on Tuesday were a murder and a suicide, Suffolk police confirmed Tuesday.
Police say that Kathryn Laine, who was found dead by her 16-year-old son in the Bennett’s Creek Landing home, died of stab wounds inflicted by her husband, Stephen Laine.
His cause of death was determined to be suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Debbie George, the city spokeswoman, wouldn’t say how many stab wounds the woman suffered. The woman was found on a bathroom floor, she said.
The teenager called 911 about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday saying that his mother was injured. Emergency responders found the 47-year-old woman dead in the bathroom and her 50-year-old husband deceased in the garage.
Neighbors on Tuesday said the news was shocking. The Laines had been very involved with their children and always helped their neighbors if they needed anything, they said.
According to online profiles, Stephen Laine was a 1979 graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, where his children currently attended school.
