If you didn’t get your fill of up-close planes during the Virginia Regional Festival of Flight two weeks ago, you can visit the annual Warbirds Over the Beach Air Show May 21-22 at the Virginia Beach Airport.
The Military Aviation Museum’s collection of aircraft from the 1940s and earlier will be on display and flying maneuvers. All the planes are meticulously restored to flying condition.
In addition, many more aircraft will be on display from other museums and personal collections from all around the country.
The Museum’s newly acquired B-17G Flying Fortress “Chuckie,” along with one of the only two flying Lancaster Bombers in the world, will be making a visit to join the impressive line-up of meticulously restored vintage aircraft that will be on display and soaring above. The P-51 Mustang and Corsair will also be headlining the extensive list of World War II aircraft.
Historical veterans of World War II also will be making special guest appearances at the air show. Col. Clarence “Bud” Anderson, a Triple Ace fighter pilot and experimental test pilot, will be in attendance. He has been called “the best fighter pilot of World War II.
In addition, William “Wild Bill” Guarnere, from the Band of Brothers, Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk, the last surviving member of the Enola Gay, and Doolittle Raiders Dick Cole, copilot, and Dave Thatcher, navigator, will be signing books and photographs. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet these heroes and hear firsthand accounts of their experiences.
The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest collections of vintage World I- and II-era fighters, bombers, trainers and seaplanes. The museum expands more than 60,000 square feet, and two hangars house a large collection of flying vintage aircraft.
The Warbirds Over the Beach show includes live air shows, an airborne demonstration, live entertainment, World War II re-enactors and period clothing and more. It is open to the public beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The events conclude at 10 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. On Friday, visitors also can see re-enactors and warplanes arriving, visit the Fighter Factor maintenance and restoration facility and more.
Tickets may be purchased at the gate. An adult daily admission ticket is $25. A youth daily admission ticket is $12. The tickets are $45 and $20 for a weekend combo ticket, which includes all three days.
The museum is located at 1341 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach.
