NSU softball runs streak to nine games

Junior Whitney Holland (King’s Fork) had two three-RBI games as Norfolk State swept three straight softball games against MEAC rival North Carolina A&T Saturday and Sunday in Norfolk.
The Lady Spartans (19-23, 6-6) won 1-0, 12-1 and 9-0 to go to a nine-game winning streak.
Holland, NSU’s third baseman a fifth-place hitter, hit a three-run home run, her third homer of the season, and had another game with two hits and three RBI in the series, taking her RBI total to 25.
The Lady Spartans are building toward the MEAC Conference Tournament May 12-14 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Virginia Union’s women’s 4×100-meter relay team, with freshman Johniqua Porter (Lakeland) as one of the four Lady Panther sprinters,
set a new school record for the third time this school year at the CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Petersburg on April 23.
The Lady Panthers finished fourth in the meet in a time of 49.10 seconds. All four sprinters on the relay are either true freshmen or redshirt-freshmen.
Marshall’s baseball team won two of three games last weekend at Conference USA foe Memphis, winning games 8-5 and 20-4 before dropping the finale 9-8.
Sophomore centerfielder Isaac Ballou (Nansemond-Suffolk) led the top
of the Herd (17-24, 4-11) batting order going 7-for-12 with two walks in the three games. Ballou tallied four runs, two RBI and hit his fifth triple of the season.
Ballou is hitting .295 with 31 runs and 17 stolen bases on the season.
